The most popular locations in Viet Nam remain Sa Pa, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, Yen Tu, Ha Long, Nha Trang and Da Lat. In 2008, almost 3 million people visited Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) out of the about 4 million Visitors To Vietnam. Saigon is considered the gateway to Vietnam before travelers wander to small beach or mountain cities and villages. Other visitors to Vietnam fly into Hanoi with is the only other International Airport. Nha Trang with its popular beach resort will open a third international airport sometime in 2009 or 2010. Despite Hanoi not being the main entry point, the city has it share of visitors that travel north along Vietnam long coastline. In 2010 Hanoi will celebrate its 1,000 year birthday, which will see a large spike in travelers flying directly into the capital of Vietnam.

Due to not reaching its goal of 4.5 million international visitors, the Vietnamese tourist department has initiated a plan to stimulate travel. The plan includes a 30-50% price cut on domestic flight and government owned hotels. This plan will last until September of 2009. In addition, special tourist events are set to be held nationwide. Low budget package tours will be develop to entice budge minded travelers seeking a great deal on in Asia. Cities throughout Vietnam will be launching numerous events and festival in 2009 and throughout 2010. Vietnam has declared 2009 as the Central Highlands Year and will feature a series of activities.
